Radium....Be aware

I suppose I should have made the first post something less extreme but, I think it is important to raise the Radium question. Maybe someone reading this doesn't yet know about Radium painted dials and this may help them to be prepared.

Note that radium paint was used on pre-1960's watches to make them glow in the dark and, even if they no longer glow, the radium is still there and still as radioactive as the day it was painted.

Anyone servicing vintage clocks and watches should be aware of Radium paint. There is no need to go into details here as there is much debate online but I think most critically we need to be aware that, when opening the timepiece, radioactive paint dust and radon gas can escape and, if breathed in or ingested, the ionising effects are exponentially more damaging.

I think everyone should take this seriously and just, be aware and be careful. I bought myself a product called Smart Geiger Pro, which plugs into the headphone jack of your phone and measures the radioactivity in microSeiverts per hour.
